The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) represents approximately 750,000 members who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada and stands out among the American unions in the AFL-CIO because it is among the largest and has members in so many skilled occupations.
The IBEW plays a major role in enhancing the quality of life for
all electricians across the United States and Canada by negotiating
contracts for electricians that secure top paying wages, high-quality
health insurance and pensions and creating safer working conditions.
Even electricians who are not members of the IBEW benefit from these
contracts. How? Well, when union wages go up, non-unionwages go up,
too! And, why else does your contractor have insurance and/or
retirement? It was the union that secured these benefits and the
non-union had to offer something to keep their workers from leaving and
joining the union. Even if it is expensive, no-good insurance!
